The Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation(TWSE)successfully hosted“the 2008 Taiwan Capital Market Investor Relations Forum”on Aug. 27,2008. The commissioner of Financial Supervisory Commission, Mr. Yin-Hua Yeh, TWSE Chairman, Mr. Chi Schive, President Samuel J.S. Hsu, and over one hundred and twenty representatives from listed companies and security-related entities participated. After the keynote speech of Mr. Eric D. Landheer, who is in charge of the Asia Pacific region of the Nasdaq OMX Group, a panel discussion on investor relations (IR) was followed. The discussion was led by Mr. Leon T. Ku, chairman of the board of directors of College Hill, and joined by Mr. Landheer; Dr. Elizabeth Sun, the head of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s investor relations department; Mr. Jair Sossa, a dealer from Shin Kong Securities Company; Ms. Ruby Yim, managing director of Taylor Rafferty; and Mr. Tsai-fu Lin, a TWSE senior vice president. TWSE Chairman, Mr. Chi Schive , stated that Taiwan has many quality small and medium-sized listed companies in the optoelectronics, communication network, electronics, chemical engineering, high-tech and traditional industries. These companies have always played significant global roles. Many of them are also valuable investment targets. If those companies pay adequate attention to IR, they can certainly attract significant attention from foreign and local investors. TWSE encouraged Taiwan listed companies to establish an IR association, just like NIRI in US, and IRS in London, which can be a platform to share experience and knowledge about IR. The commissioner of Financial Supervisory Commission, Mr. Yin-Hua Yeh, also indicated that in addition to the core businesses, top management must participate actively in IR activities in order to enhance the investors’ understanding of its commitment to the business. Transparency, compliance, and good communication also play important roles, and are very important factors of Corporate Governance. Mr. Landheersaid that companies face fierce global competition. This situation also presents an opportunity. As long as companies can build solid IR function, they will certainly obtain positive responses from global investors. IR specialists consider that successful IR function can not only help investors to realize the accurate valuation of the companies but also assist companies themselves in decision-making and developing long-term strategies. There were numerous opinion exchanges during the panel discussion. The forum ran perfectly and ended at 4 o’clock p.m.
